Every match comes with a receipt.

QuarkCrew is a Pittsburgh staffing agency. We fill hourly and skilled jobs at warehouses, machine shops, robotics companies, support desks and building facilities. A model breaks each job into its parts and matches people on the evidence. A recruiter checks the match and signs the receipt that goes with it.

One job title, taken apart

“Warehouse associate” could mean a reach truck at thirty feet or a tape gun at waist height. Before we look at anyone, the model breaks the req into its parts. The hiring manager then edits that list and signs it, and we match on the signed version.

This is the req behind the first receipt above, as the manager signed it. The crossed-out items were all in their first draft.

The job $21.50 an hour, overtime most weeks (usually a Saturday half shift), starts October 14, Neville Twp

Apply by answering questions about the work

No resume. For a reach-truck req it’s these nine questions, about six minutes on a phone. Send us your name and the work you’ve done, and we’ll send the questions for the closest open req.

We check what we can with whoever issued it: certifications with the issuer, licenses with the state, your last forklift evaluation with the employer who did it. Your new site will still evaluate you on its own trucks, because OSHA requires it, but they’ll start from what you’ve done.

You hear back within one business day. A no comes with the reason, and with what else is open.

Apply
  1. Which lift trucks have you run, and for how long? Sit-down, reach, order picker, pallet jack.
  2. What’s the highest you’ve put away?
  3. Which shifts can you work, and is any of them a hard no?
  4. How long a commute works for you?
  5. Have you used an RF scanner or a WMS? Which ones?
  6. Can you lift 50 pounds over and over through a shift?
  7. Have you worked in a cooler or a freezer?
  8. When could you start?
  9. You’re putting away at 28 feet and the load on the forks shifts. What do you do?
    How we score this one
    1. 4 Stops, sounds the horn and keeps people out of the aisle. Lowers the load slowly to the floor, restacks it there, and tells a lead.
    2. 3 Lowers it slowly to the floor, but doesn’t warn anyone or report it.
    3. 2 Tries to nudge it into the slot at height.
    4. 1 Doesn’t mention the load at all.

The hiring manager writes the rubric with us. Every answer is scored against it, with the reasoning written out, and everyone in a req gets the same questions.

Opening a req

Open a req before noon and you’ll usually have a shortlist by the next morning, with certifications checked. Prior employers get called the same day, and their answers follow as they come in. For volume shifts you order headcount instead, matched the same way.

Open a req
Shortlist
Three to five people for direct hire and temp-to-hire. Sometimes fewer, and then we tell you which requirement is narrowing the pool.
Employer of record
W-2 payroll, workers’ comp, unemployment insurance, I-9 and E-Verify.
Markup
Set per job family, because workers’ comp costs differ: from 1.36 times the pay rate for support desks to 1.58 for warehouse work. Overtime bills at time and a half.
Direct hire and conversion
Direct hire is 18% of first-year pay. Converting a temp costs 9% before 520 hours on assignment and nothing after.
Guarantee
A temp who doesn’t work out in the first 30 days is replaced, and the replacement’s first 40 hours aren’t billed. A direct hire who leaves within 60 days gets you a new search at no charge.
Billing
Weekly, from timecards your supervisor approves in the app or on paper. One invoice per site, net 15.
Forklift evaluations
OSHA treats training a temp as a shared job. You evaluate each operator on your trucks at your site before they run them; we send their last evaluation, and the contract says who does what.
Adverse-impact check
Every quarter we compare selection rates across all your reqs by sex, race and age, from the self-ID applicants can skip, and send you the numbers. Anything under four-fifths of the top group’s rate gets looked at.

Does a computer decide whether I get the job?

No. Software drafts the shortlist and a recruiter makes the call. If you think it got you wrong, tell us and a recruiter will go through your application from scratch.

What does it cost me?

Nothing. Employers pay us.

When do you run a background check?

Only after a conditional offer, and only the checks the role needs; a forklift job doesn’t get a credit check. If a report comes back with something on it, you get a copy and a summary of your rights before anyone decides, and time to tell us what’s wrong with it. Driving jobs ask about your record up front, but we only pull it after an offer.

Where do you place people?

Allegheny County and the counties around it, mostly.

What happens to what I send you?

We keep applications for two years, then delete them. We don’t sell anything, and we don’t use your answers to train anything.
